Awaiting
I met my best friend,
The Earth
One fine day.
She was,
but a warm friend
as always.
I asked her
for water,
as I was tired
from the long journey.
Earth gave me
an odd laugh
but handed a glass
nonetheless.
I glanced at it
and looked up back.
Her eyes were moistened,
as her voice cracked,
"This is all that is left."
I was eerily silent
as my gaze
locked on the glass
for the tenth time
that day.
In it were
minute chips
of plastic
immersed
in uncanny black water.
I was
beyond parched
and so forced the 'water'
down my throat.
I asked the Earth
for some food
as I was tired
from the long journey.
She studied me,
pitifully,
but handed a plate
nonetheless.
I gazed at it
and regretted everything.
Instead of
some
delightful fruits
there were sandwiches
of currency notes
and cakes
of gold coins.
How I was supposed to eat them
I didn't know.
I looked at Earth,
but she cried,
"You wanted it all your life."
I tried a stunt
and took a bite.
My stomach churned
and I fell to the floor
I couldn't breathe,
and was screaming
at the top of my lungs
or so I tried to.
I couldn't let out a
quiet murmur
without my body
hurting all over.
I motioned
for some oxygen,
some air,
and finally
Earth broke down.
I expected to hear,
"There isn't much."
But she wailed,
"There isn't any left!"
My life
passed
before my eyes
and I couldn't see
my successes,
or
my massive wealth
all I saw
was every second
how I betrayed
the only friend
I had,
The Earth.
