Maharashtra Reading Day 2020

Books.

For others these may just be a compilation of printed papers. But books are a lot more than that. Books are important to our lives.

Hopefully most of you must have read quite a few books.

And yes Congrats!

You may not know but you're benefiting a lot from reading. Whohooo!!

~ Reading can give you the power to read the minds of other people.

You don't believe me? Well you should. There was a study published in the journal SCIENCE suggesting that enjoying literature might help you strengthen your mind reading abilities.

Why is reading important?

~ It is important because it is a habit that can make you a better person. Biographies of great men and women tell us that most of them became great because of the inspiration they got from reading books especially during their childhood days.

This day is observed every year on 15th October as it is the birth anniversary of our late Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam who strongly advocated ‘reading’ more as a necessity rather than just a mere hobby.

~ Books not only inspire us, but they also provide knowledge. Even though technology has brought in many changes to the way we read, it has only enhanced our ability to get connected to different sources of knowledge through reading.

Reading increases knowledge and you never know when this knowledge will be useful. The more knowledge you have the better equipped you are to tackle any challenges you may face.

~ When you are tired and stressed in your life, why don't you open a book? Reading can release stress. As a matter of fact, a recent study shows that reading is a better stress reliever than music or any other method.

~ Reading keeps your brain sharp. Those who engage in mentally stimulating activities such as reading, experience a slower memory decline compared to those who don't.

~ For those of you who have problems in sleeping, reading might help you sleep better.

Reading has several more merits.

~ It keeps us connected with the outside world.

~ It enriches and expands our vocabulary and develops the skill of concentration.

~ Reading provides us with pure enjoyment and sheer pleasure.

~ It is to be noted that reading exposes our mind to different cultures and languages of the world.

~ It helps us to digest the best that different regions of the world like Asia and the Middle East, America, Europe, and Africa have to offer us.

~ As our minds are exposed to such a wealth of ideas through reading, it helps us to communicate with depth of thought and a wide mixture of emotional colors as well.

~ Again, reading gives us entertainment. Novels, short stories, poems, travelogues, and even comics entertain our minds.

~ It helps us relax.

More than that, it engages our mind in a way nothing else does.

~ Our imagination is ignited when we read.

~ We become co-creators of stories as we animate the stories we read in our minds.

~ It is definitely a healthy exercise to the mind.

~ Through reading we can travel. We can see the places we have never seen before. Through the author's creative descriptions and your mind's amazing power to imagine we can see this place is as if they are in front of us.

I know that most of us are only reading for entertainment.

~ Whenever we read, we encounter many emotions: happiness... sorrow... joy... pity... and many more.

Some stories touch our hearts deeply.

While reading a book it is like we’re entering a whole new world.

A world which may not be real, but it exists in our hearts and minds.

We cry, we laugh we may even yell at the characters. It is like we're experiencing magic.

The magic of a book, the magic of reading.

Stephen King once said 'Books are uniquely portable magic.'

How true that is!

Now that we know the importance of reading in our lives what are we waiting for?

Why don't we make library as one of our homes, and books as our new best friends?

After all, "A Reader lives 1000 lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only 1" said by George R.R Martin

Therefore, I strongly urge each one of you to cultivate the habit of reading so as to derive maximum benefit.
